For the Video Game Book Club we read Five Nights at Freddy’s The Silver Eyes, both the novel and the comic. It is a re-imagining of the first FNAF game. Author and creator of FNAF Scott Cawthon states that the novel is canon same as the games, however its in a separate continuity. According to The Video Game Book Clubs own Elise…

Scott Cawthon’s popular horror video game is brought to life on the page by Kira Breed-Wrisley. Disclaimer, I have never played Five Nights at Freddy’s but I have read several Goosebumps books which is what this reminded me of. There is a nostalgic effect with these stories as it is set in a Chuck E. Cheese type setting and R.L. Stein storytelling.

The premise of the story is that 10 years after the disappearance of their friend Michael several characters come back to the town where it happened for a dedication of a scholarship in his name by his parents. They decide to try to find their favorite place where Michael disappeared, Freddy’s pizzeria. They find it hidden in an abandoned shopping mall construction zone and it looks as if they are the first to be there in the 10 years, stopped in time from that horrible night. What could go wrong?

There are some weird things that happen and the kids find their favorite play place turned into a nightmare. In this story there were some good rises in suspense. I was a little irritated with some of the decisions by the characters, but they are teenagers and this is kind of like a horror movie so I think you are supposed to yell, “don’t go in there” or “what are you doing?” as you read. This is a series of books but this one told only part of the story leaving me with a bunch of questions. It’s appropriate for kids although it does deal in violence and murder, it’s put out by scholastic.
