The Last of Us Season 2 – Future Days

The Last of Us Season 2 has started off a little slow. It introduces Abby in a cryptic way without giving you a lot of details on her or her backstory. Apparently this was done on purpose to try and make her more empathic. I understand how it’s harder to empathize with a character you are just watching on TV instead of playing as, but I don’t think limited information will help. All we know she’s a firefly and she wants revenge on Joel.

Here she is, its our girl Abby. I hope she gets bigger arms

In case you missed it, at the end of the first season Joel kills a whole hospital of freedom fighters called Fireflies after delivering Ellie to them. Ellie is Immune to this fungal infection that has caused people to turn into monsters. To create a cure they had to use Ellie but the surgery will kill her. Joel grew attached to Ellie on the way to the hospital (see season 1) and ended up killing the doctor and most of the staff. Joel ends up taking Ellie to a settlement in Wyoming that is run by his brother, Tommy. Joel lied to Ellie about what happened and Ellie doesn’t believe him, this is where Joel and Ellie start drifting apart. Five years later they are drifting apart even further.

The weird therapist character making Joel cry

Even though five years have passed since the first season it seems like Ellie’s character hasn’t developed one bit. She hasn’t changed into a moody teen that doesn’t trust Joel but instead she’s still a bratty tween that doesn’t trust Joel. Perhaps her personality shift will happen later on in the season after tragedy strikes. I feel as though they missed the opportunity for a climax ending to the first episode but I’m sure fans of season 1 will stick around next week to see what’s in store.
