I Gotta Get This Of My Chest
The Game Awards celebrated its 10 year anniversary this year. I’ve been watching The Game Awards since its first showing in 2014 and even further back when it was the Spike Video Game Awards. I’ve always loved watching The Game Awards it just took me this long to admit it. Its very easy to mock The Award Awards. Every year there are streamers making fun of it live, cringe compilation and even friends refusing to go to my Game Award parties because they “don’t know any of the games nominated”. The Game Awards have become much more then just awards (although some may argue its become game ads with awards sprinkled in) its now another E3 (RIP), especially this year.
This year were seeing a lot of showcases put on by the usual groups, Day of the Devs, Wholesome Games etc. A lot of them are calling these little showcases the Game Awards edition. I think The Game Awards does a good job with what it is setting out to do, celebrate games. Although I don’t always agree with there choices and I honestly detest who they put on their jury its still a fun show to watch. It does a good job of having that flash, boom, bang with the orchestra, celebrity’s and set pieces. The celebs can be a problem when they take up more time then the actual developers but they seemed to be fixing that, this year seemed to tone down the famous people. Speaking of famous people I am always excited to see which Muppets Geoff is going to get. This year knocked it out of the park with Statler and Waldorf. In fact I kind of wish they would come back every year. I especially loved that joke about why the seats are empty because Geoff is such a sell out. Watching those two mock Geoff made me realize something, its okay to make fun of The Game Awards even if you like it.
I know that may seem like a obvious thing to say but you must know the feeling when someone is yucking your yumms. The Game Awards are goofy and its okay to laugh at it with your friends. Its also okay to enjoy The Game Awards and cry during the world premieres or (more likely) the orchestra. I felt that I had to watch The Game Awards alone because it always seemed like the people around me didn’t care about the show. It can be an awkward experience watching it with someone who doesn’t match your enthusiasm. Its also awkward to have my friends watch me cry because a new Sonic game is announced so maybe its better if I watch it alone. Anyway lets get on with the main event, the world premieres, because who cares who won.
