Lethal Company: First Impressions

Lethal Company is a co-op indie horror game about collecting scrap on seven abandoned moons and selling it to “the company”. The gameplay consists of walking around and collecting objects in abandoned facilities. It is a horror game though so these facilities are full of creatures that you don’t want to run into. Some of the moons also have hostile creatures outside so if you leave someone on the ship they also need to be vigilant. You can buy objects to make your scavenging a little easier, such as flashlights or walkie talkies. Your ship has a radar that shows your teammates and creatures nearby, so with the help of the walkie you can let your team know they are running into a trap. It gets harder at night, more creatures come out, so work fast to get all the items. You need to get your quota otherwise…well you’ll find out.

If you earn enough money you can go to more challenging moons and get better stuff, but your risk of death is higher. If a crewmate dies be sure to bring back their body or you will be charged a retrieval fee. After all the collecting is done you fly to the company and sell off your goods. Other than equipment to make the game easier you can also buy outfits and ship decorations with your extra cash.

This game has a genuinely scary atmosphere especially when you’re inside. The facilities have eerie sounds of the building settling and footsteps that aren’t your own. The creatures in the buildings seem to come out of nowhere and when you least expect them. One moment you are just looking around a room, the next a set of eyes are looking back at you from the door, not moving unless you do. It’s extra fun to play with proximity chat. It really puts you on edge when you can’t hear your friend anymore. It is really startling to split up then you turn a corner and see your friends body, unsure where the monster that killed them is. The pressure of the quota deadline is really heavy. I would recommend playing with as many friends as you can to make it easier on you. You can play with up to four people (or more with a mod). It’s a fun little space romp with a hidden mystery as to what happened to the previous crew. It is currently in early access but according to Zeekerss the Dev “Lethal Company is “finished” but still far from realizing its potential.” I’m excited to see what new features they add and I’ll be popping back into this game periodically with my crew.
