Venba Review

A Game That Will Make You Want to Call Your Mom

Venba is a heartwarming cooking puzzle visual novel about an Indian immigrant family in Canada. You play as Venba the mother of the family as she tries to connect to her son through cooking. The cooking is presented as a puzzle, you have your mothers old cookbook but it’s pretty beaten up and hard to read. You are tasked with recreating the recipes with very little information. Venba likes to listen to the radio while cooking, the Tamil music in the game not only bops but is also an original soundtrack, inspired by Tamil music throughout the ages. The cooking segments are broken up with visual novel style storytelling with amazing stylized visuals. You do have different dialogue choices but it’s very low stakes.

This game will make you hungry. It does a good job of making me want to make every single dish presented to me in game. Luckily they added a DLC recently that added a cookbook to the game where you can read and create the recipes yourself without having to solve a puzzle. The game is about a 1 to 2 hour experience. It’s a short but sweet journey that I’m sure anyone can relate to on some level.
