The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe Review

The end is never the end is never the end

The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe is a re-imaging/sequel to The Stanley Parable. It’s a first person walking sim where you play as Stanley being directed on how to play the game by a disembodied narrator. But you have free will (sort of) and can choose to listen to the voice or go your own way. There are 46 different endings and I’m still not sure If I got them all.

Ultra Deluxe adds a bunch of different endings on top of all the endings from the original Stanley Parable although one has changed. Not to go too much into spoilers but one of the ending teleports you to different games. In the original Stanley Parable it was Minecraft and Portal; those two games have changed in Ultra Deluxe but there are still nods to them around the museum area.

The age old question of is it worth it to get Ultra Deluxe instead of the original? I would say yes! You get the same Stanley Parable (minus what I just talked about above) and its sequel, its twice as much content. The controls feel much better than the original. Stanley Parable was a source engine game so Stanley used to slide around like Gorden Freeman in Half Life. The new controls are much more tight and similar to modern walking sims.

Overall, The Stanley Parable is a comedy walking sim. You spend the game walking around and listening to a British guy tell you what he thinks you should be doing. There isn’t an overarching story or larger plot, it is just a bunch of smaller stories in the same office with the same two characters. It’s a game about player agency, and how much control does the player have in the greater narrative of a story. It also has commentary on video game sequels and the games industry as a whole but that’s another bucket of worms you can open when you play The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe for yourself.
