The Quarry is another Interactive Drama brought to you by Supermassive Games, but this one feels more 80’s slasher than any of their previous entries. Taking place at a summer camp, you play as the camp counselors as they go through a horrific night dealing with multiple creatures on the campground.
Like most of these titles the game is fairly short but unlike Supermassive Games previous Dark Picture titles, which feels more like short stories, this one is more akin to Until Dawn taking about 10 or so hours (depending on how many you kept alive). The game has 186 different endings depending on how well the player did on quick time events, finding clues and talking to your fellow campers. I really appreciate that this game added an accessibility feature where you couldn’t messup the quick time events, button mashing, aiming and shooting so you can really just watch it like a movie and just tell the characters what to say. ( I really should have disabled these… then my counselors might still be alive) There is a movie mode where you set the personality of the characters and just watch events unfold if you don’t want to participate at all.
The Quarry is divided into 10 chapters with a prologue and epilogue. In between each chapter you are visited by a fortune teller. If you collected tarot cards throughout that chapter she will show you a small snippet of a potential future event so you can better prepare. You can collect multiple cards but she only reads one so choose wisely.
The Quarry also has online and local multiplayer. Local allows you to take control of certain characters, which is kinda unnecessary since you just pass the controller but I mean it’s a nice thought. Online is interesting because you and up to seven players are voting on decisions.
The DLC’s for this game include alternate filters and outfits for the characters, as well as more gore in movie mode and Death Rewind for your first playthrough. Usually you have to play through the game to access death rewind and live with your poor choices, but now for 15$ you get the privilege of not having to deal with consequences for your mistakes.
Overall The Quarry feels more like Until Dawn then the Dark Picture games. It’s longer than a lot of them and has a crazy amount of quick time events. The story is actually really interesting, and the acting from this cast was actually really well done. My first playthrough was awful and at the end I got a lot of people killed. It’s hard not to feel anger at a game that insults you for messing up but I know at the end of the day it was my fault. So my best advice if you’re thinking about going down to Hackett’s Quarry is don’t hesitate.
