High on Life & High on Knife Review

Shooting Globby Globs Straight Through my Heart

I love games with chatty companions and silent protagonists so I already knew I was gonna like this game from the first trailer. You play as a male or female human bounty hunter, your choice (It doesn’t matter in this game since you will be only referred to as “Bounty Hunter”). Throughout the game you are collecting alien guns known as Gatlin’s while trying to take down an alien drug cartel called the G3 who are turning humans into drugs.

Each alien gun you pick up has different abilities that will help you not only dispatch enemies but will also help you platform through levels. Platforming is a huge part of this game and it gives you a lot of freedom later on. The platforming is very fluid and fun. The same goes for the shooting, when combined you are zipping around the maps living the power fantasy. It has a lot of replay value, your gun’s dialogue is randomized enough and depending on which one you have out they could have different things to say about each situation you find yourself in. After completing the game I immediately started another game to see what would happen if I picked different decisions. I have replayed this game 4 times as of writing this review.

The aesthetic is goopy for sure, very colorful and oversaturated. I love the juxtaposition between the hyper realistic humans and the cartoony squishy aliens. Not everyone is going to like this style of humor, however I feel that this game doesn’t have the nihilistic outlook that most Adult Cartoons have.  It’s actually really sweet you grow attached to these characters as they grow attached to you, the player. I personally have an issue with gore and Adult Swim style cartoons. They love the grotesque Akira globby Tetsuo style of gore. Being able to control the gore and be the protagonist of an Adult Swim show really made me realize that the gore can be ignored and I got over myself. It gets knocked a point for too many tunnels though, that’s just lazy.

High On Knife DLC Review

A year later we got the first DLC High on Knife and it is spooky. It takes place two years after the events of High on Life, you are still bounty hunting, your sister is MIA and you dropped Kenny somewhere. Now you have a new gun named Harper whose dialogue is similar to Kennys but her quirk is that she’s a military veteran. The story is all about Knifey ( as you can probably guess) and how he wants to go back to his homeworld to see his family.

Much more boosting around in this one. They added races and little green bugs that refill your boost meter so you can cross the vast plains. You also get a new gun (besides Harper) that helps you solve puzzles. The DLC is fairly short, only taking me around 4 hours to beat but after that you can explore the new planet to your heart’s content. I would recommend replaying the main game if, like me, you are jumping into this DLC a year later. I wished it was longer to be honest so I’m glad I took the time to replay the game, plus it’s always nice to replay games you love. If you liked High on Life you will like this DLC, unless you were super attached to Kenny specifically.
