Blue Prince Review

“…wonder why daring feels just like defeat”

Blue Prince is a puzzle game involving drafting different rooms in Mt.Holly in order to make a path to room 46. Your uncle has left you this estate but he’s not going to make it easy for you. Everytime you click on a door you get three random rooms from a deck to draft, some have items that can help others are dead ends. After a certain number of steps have been reached the day ends and the manor resets. There are things you can do that can carry over into other days like draft a coat check room and leave an item in it so the next time you draft a coat check room you can acquire that item again. Items include but are not limited to, a shovel to dig for items when you find dirt spots, a magnifying glass to help solve puzzles and read lore documents better and a metal detector that will blink the closer you are to a key, gem or coin. You can use coins to buy items or food, gems are used for crafting more elaborate rooms and keys are used to open locked doors that you may encounter later on in your run.

As you explore the mansion you come across little crumbs of info about this world’s lore and what is going on with your family. It’s a real slow-burn story and a lot of the important information can’t be found until after you first reach room 46. This game definitely overstays its welcome. It’s extremely addicting at first but I personally feel as though I was done with it after reaching my initial goal of room 46, but the game was not done with me. Late game it started to become extremely grindy. You often have to set up puzzles for the next day or days after even. It’s also very random with what rooms and items you will receive, you really have to be lucky or at least don’t close yourself off without a backup plan.

It has a lot of interesting puzzles, it’s definitely a pen and paper type of game (and maybe a calculator for some math puzzles). You are rewarded for exploring in this game and picking rooms that you wouldn’t normally. You are usually rewarded with little lore bits and oftentimes more work to do. While the game is addicting and fun at first it gets old after completing your first goal. I would recommend jumping into this one if you’re a fan of rouge-likes or Myst-clones. I think you will be surprised how deep this mystery goes.
