SGN’s E3 Obituary

Today the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced that The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is officially dead. After 28 years gaming’s biggest event is over. The last in-person E3 show was in 2019, the pandemic was not kind to E3. The 2020 event was canceled for obvious reasons, but they came back for a digital only showcase in 2021. 2022 was canceled for “lack of interest” as more and more studios were pulling out, opting instead to do much cheaper digital showcases. Today E3 is gone forever, and I never got the chance to attend.

I’ve been watching it every year since 2004 when it was shown on G4. It was something to look forward to, I love getting hyped about new games and consoles even when I was too young to buy them. I always wanted to go to E3 and now I sadly never will. E3 had so much flash, the whole industry (at one point) coming together to share its up and coming projects. It was important to me. I had different streams going on different computers and TVs because I liked IGNs conference coverage but I liked GameSpots interviews more. I loved watching people walk the show floor, showing off all the displays that I would never get to experience. Of course it got memed on with countless cringe compilations but that added to its charm. I hope we have something take its place soon. I can’t keep up with all these showcases, fests and directs.

Nothing lasts forever and all good things must end. Goodbye E3 I’ll miss you.
