Ravenlok Review- A Quick Little Journey into Wonderland

Ravenlok is a cute little game developed by Cococucumber. You play as a young girl moving into her aunt’s old farm house. But your aunt had a secret, a magic mirror in her barn transports you to a wonderland. Sadly that wonderland is being run by a tyrannical queen and the only one that can stop her is you, under the new title Ravenlok.

The game is really a hack and slash with some magic thrown in as you progress. Combat is pretty simple and smooth. There are three worlds you need to progress through, a mushroom forest, a theater and a labyrinth. Each one has little side quests you can do in order to acquire more equipment like health potions and bombs. You can also buy health potions and bombs from multiple vendors, if you don’t want to engage in any side content. I personally like the side quest where you have to collect these cats around the map by dancing in front of them. Having a designated dance button makes me smile.

You smash pots around the map to earn money and every time you exit that area of the map and come back the pots reset so it’s very easy to just farm for cash. Same goes for the enemies they respawn when you leave the area too. They drop feathers that can be used to upgrade your overall stats. The only upgrade area I could find was a little mouse outside a witches hut but it’s very easy to get to since it’s right next to a fast travel mirror.

The game’s aesthetic is classic Cococucumber, a 3D pixel art look. The environments are beautiful to look at and the creature designs are really well done. This is a perfect game to introduce someone to gaming with. It’s a simple and quick game, won’t be frustrating and has all the whimsy of a classic Alice in Wonderland adventure.
