Immortals of Aveum Review

Immortals of Aveum is a first-person magic shooter developed by Ascendant Studios and published by EA. It’s an extremely unique and snappy shooter with interesting lore that I would honestly like to see more from. You play as Jak, a street urchin who ends up joining a group of elite battlemages to fight in the Everwar. The three different types of magic Jak fights with blue, red and green. Blue magic is about precision, like a pistol or a sniper rifle. Red magic is like a shotgun it shoots out in bursts but it has a short range. Green magic is like a machine gun. It shoots out a lot of bullets but they don’t really do as much damage. Each enemy mage is a different color and if you shoot them with the same color it does more damage. Each color of magic also has a special move that does a bunch of damage but you have to make sure your magic meter is full.

You collect these little trinkets throughout the story that help in puzzle solving and combat. You get a blue whip that will help you zip around the map and pull enemies to you. A red magic deflector that will (you guessed it) deflect magic and it can also be used to solve light puzzles and break red rocks. And a green bottle that can be thrown at enemies or platforms or chests to slow them down. Jumping around and mixing and matching different magic colors is highly encouraged but it can get a little too chaotic at times.

There is a hub world and characters to talk to but they are only there so you can learn more about the world’s lore. You have dialogue options but it doesn’t really matter how you speak to them. The soundtrack is like hip-hop trap music which is unique. There are a lot of things to do in the open world/open areas. If you want to just run around and explore you will find little puzzles and enemies to fight around every corner. There is a lot of walking and swinging from one location to another and I ended up getting lost a lot but it wasn’t too bad with fast travel gates and beautiful environments to look at.

The plot is very young adult fantasy novel with your scrappy underdog teen boy, friendships and cheesy dialogue but I must admit it did charm me. One of the big issues I had (besides getting lost) was some of the fights were brutal. I must have not leveled up enough because near the end of the game I had to repeat encounters a lot which was getting frustrating. It felt like I was using healing crystals every second but hey maybe that’s a skill issue. I thought this game was pretty cool, it’s got a lot going on in its world and honestly I would kinda like to read a book about it.
