Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made Review

For the video game book club we read Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made by Jason Schreier. It’s one of our first non-fiction novels that are about the creation of video games and not a tie-in novel to an already existing franchise. I have been aware of Jason Schreier for a while, mostly because of  his work at Kotaku. I agree with a lot of his points, mainly about how it’s amazing any video game gets made.

This book started out really interesting but some of the chapters were really annoying, Shovel Knight I’m looking at you. I liked the way Jason Schreier set up the book but somehow Balder’s Gate made it into to most chapters. Although the book is divided into games and developers it is really about different topics such as game engines, international companies, and crunch. It is surprising that any game gets made. If you are expecting a tell all expose, this is not that book. It was very PC and on the record.
