Myst (2021) Review

Maybe the realMyst was the Friends we Made Along the Way.

“Welcome to Myst: a starkly beautiful island, eerily tinged with mystery and shrouded in intrigue. Built from the ground up to play in 2D & VR, explore Myst in a whole new dimension! Journey to the Ages, unravel puzzles, and be a part of the surrealistic adventure that will become your own.”

Oh Myst, what can I say about Myst that hasn’t already been said. Some say it ruined classic adventure games, others say it created a whole genre. It certainly is revolutionary, one of those games that turned non-gamers into gamers. Myst has been remade countless times but this time it isn’t only graphically updated but it’s also available in VR.

My Favorite Age

I’m coming into this new to Myst, I haven’t played the original or real Myst I only know the legacy. Myst surprised me . I expected to be frustrated and I was, at first, but once you get the hang of it Myst isn’t actually that difficult. You don’t even need a pen and paper because this version adds a photo mode so you can keep track of puzzle solutions by just snapping a picture of them ( I still use pen and paper, it’s a nice option though).

This version of Myst adds a puzzle randomizer for all you Myst-heads who have played the game a million times and memorized all of the puzzle solutions. It also includes a remake of Rime Age which is accessed after beating the best ending in the game. Rime was originally available only if you played realMyst, the other 3D remake of Myst from 2014. In fact this game is sorta a remake of a remake.

My Least Favorite Age

They replaced the FMV actors with CG characters which does cause it to lose some of that old game charm. Luckily they added an update that brings the original FMV back; you just have to change it in the interface settings. Well except for the final cutscene with Atrus during the good end, that one is still in CG sadly. Myst is a beautiful game with extremely interesting lore and importance to the gaming industry and I think everyone should play it at least once.
