Five Nights at Freddy’s: The Week Before Review

Five Nights at Freddy’s the Week Before is an interactive novel/ choose your own adventure novel that takes place before the events of the very first Fnaf game. You play as Ralph the phone guy as he takes on his last week working at Freddy Fazbears Pizza. It plays just like an adventure game, you collect items to use throughout each of the 5 (maybe 6) nights, it even punishes you for cheating.

According to Elise from the Video Game Book Club

At night, the animations wander and at first you are weary of them because there has been rumors of them being aggressive but then you must run or hide when they are near and it becomes important to check your cameras to see where they have wandered off to. Each night gives you different challenges and you collect items to use later along the way.

This was a good idea but I found some issues with the execution of the idea. We the reader are missing some information about why our character is acting the way he is and there are some inconsistencies in his character. You can also see through the pages that if your choice is the next page whether or not it ends in a game over which may affect the choices you make. There is also a bonus item that you can choose to use but you don’t find out what that item is until night 5. In order to use the item you would have to do a second read through much like a new game plus in a video game.

If you are a fan of FNaF then I would recommend these types of books, and this could be a good start. It does help to have some background of the world before reading this particular book.
