Metro Last Light Redux is a remaster of Metro Last Light, and the sequel to Metro 2033. Unlike Metro 2033 this was not based on an already existing novel but the Novel Metro 2035 was written after Last Light and is considered a sort of novelization of this game. The author of Metro 2033, Dmitry Glukhovsky, also was one of the writers of Last Light. The redux part is really just quality of life improvements and a graphics upgrade. The reduxs of these metro games makes the lighting to bright and shiny for a grim dark style game, in my opinion. I also believe that Last Light doesn’t have as spooky of an atmosphere as 2033. When I heard they tried to make a game similar to Half Life 2 I was excited but it was honestly a let down.

You are back in the shoes of Artyom and it has been a year since the events of Metro 2033. Artyom is now a ranger and is tasked with finding the last Dark One. Chaos ensues and you are dragged around the whole Metro once again. Metro Last Light is much more action packed and has a lot of cool set pieces. It is also much more companion focus. For most of the game you will have companions that will follow you around, help with stealth takedowns and killing things. I would like to take the time to complain about one companion in particular if you will indulge me. Artyom gets a love interest in this game named Anna. I realize that this is a fast paced shoot’ em up game but I would have liked more development on their relationship before they sealed the deal. It felt like it came out of nowhere so much so that I thought Arytom was having one of his classic dream sequences.

The gameplay of Last Light Redux is basically the Metro 2033 Redux. It’s very casual friendly although sometimes I feel as though the enemy waves overstayed their welcome. The only difference I can see between redux vs the original is that redux gives Artyom more animations. You still have limited resources because the currency in this game is bullets. The gunplay is fun and snappy. This was in 2033 as well but I really like that the shopkeepers selling you weapons will tell you verbally if your weapon is better or worse then the one you are looking at. What good guys, I’m surprised that they are not trying to scam me out of my bullets.

I do think Metro Last Light is good. My problems with it are largely character and plot based. I don’t like that they changed one scene from the novel in order to fit the narrative the game wanted to tell. But if the author wanted to recon his own book who am I to tell him not to. While playing Last Light I just kept thinking, maybe the book will be better.
