From Metro with Love

Metro 2033 Redux is a survival horror FPS that takes place in an apocalyptic Moscow where civilization lives in the underground trying to survive. You play as Artyom who must go on a quest across the metro to fulfill a promise and save his station.

Metro 2033 Redux is a remake of Metro 2033 and currently one of the only ways to play. It’s a bummer that the original Metro 2033 got delisted. Redux is different then the original; lighting is brighter, gunplay is different, bigger longer levels, and more weapons.

Not sure if bigger is always better, I had an issue while playing where I got lost a lot. I wasn’t sure where to go. I found out later that this was because I wasn’t using my compass. Holding down the lighter button brings up your compass which will show you the direction of your objective, however this game doesn’t really reward wandering around. Most of the levels throw hordes of enemies at you and ammo is scarce. The other levels are stealth based so wandering around aimlessly will get you caught. There are keys scattered around each level that will open  safes so saying that they don’t reward exploring is not one hundred percent true, I personally just felt punished for investigating.

This game is a survival horror where ammo is in short supply, you can also use your ammo as currency. If you waste all your ammo because you’re just a spray and pray kinda girl you can always use melee to get you out of a sticky situation. Since ammo is so scarce I found it weird how many “hordes of enemies you’re supposed to die to” moments there are in this game. This is a game that rewards multiple playthroughs since it does have different endings. The endings depend on how many karma points you have. They don’t tell you about it, it’s a hidden system you can tell you got a karma point when the screen flashes blue and you hear a heavy sigh. You can also lose moral points by killing NPCs, making bad choices and going in loud when you are supposed to stealth which is where I went wrong.

Metro 2033 Redux is a cult classic based on a cult classic. As you probably know Metro 2033 the game is based on Metro 2033 the book written by Dmitry Glukhovesky. I started reading it for our book club and couldn’t decide if I should read the book first or play the game. So I did them at the same time. The book and the game are very different from each other. The character of Artyom seems different from his book counterpart as well. He is a silent protagonist but you can collect journals throughout the levels that tell you what he is thinking and after bouncing back and forth from the book to the game Artyom’s tone seems very different.

I believe that it is best to play the game first because the book may ruin the game for you. That doesn’t mean I don’t like the game, It’s just a different beast. There are things that the game did that I liked more than the book and vice versa. The book is more of a psychological horror where the game is more action oriented.
